We are aware of the $110 billion market gap readily available for Africa to fill in the GCC. MTFC aims to tackle this imbalance by creating an avenue for agro stakeholders from the GCC and Africa to form strategic trade partnerships that will help them meet the Food security demand, with Dubai as a hub.

However with Precision Farming on board, farmers can manage their farm from digital devices and remotely control tractors that have already been installed with GPS, and instruct distant crop watering systems to turn on and off. Sensors can be placed in fields to measure temperature (air and soil), and humidity. Drones and satellites can also be used to collect and analyze data, which will aid in informing farmers on fertilizing and tending to their crops.

Precision Farming is a farming management concept based on observing, measuring and responding to inter and intra-field variability in crops. The goal of precision agriculture research is to define a decision support system (DSS) for whole farm management with the goal of optimizing returns on inputs while preserving resources.

Instead of discarding local knowledge, precision farming augments it and provide cost-effective and accurate ways to predict and protect the growth of agricultural crops. Farmers in most developed countries are using technology to look at data on weather, soil quality, air quality and crop progress. They make use of real-time information collected by control centres to decide when to plant, fertilise and harvest. Technology promises change for agriculture that saves time and money for farmers.

Precision farming has four stages;

Data Collection: This enables the farmer compare information gathered from soils, residual nitrogen analysis, and information on previous crops and soil resistivity. It can be done in two ways;

The field is delineated using an in-vehicle GPS receiver as the farmer drives a tractor around the field.

The field is broken down on a basemap gotten from aerial or satellite imagery. The base images must have the right level of resolution and geometric quality to ensure that geolocation is sufficiently accurate.

Variables: intra and inter field variability results from a number of factors; climatic conditions (hail, drought, rain etc.), soil (texture, depth, nitrogen levels), cropping practices (no-till farming), weeds and disease. Permanent indicators provide farmers with information about the main environmental constants. Point indicators allow them to track a crop’s status, to see whether diseases are developing or if the crop is suffering from water stress, nitrogen stress, or lodging, whether it has been damaged by ice and so on.

This information may come from weather stations and other sensors (soil electrical resistivity, detection with the naked eye, satellite imagery, etc.). Soil resistivity measurements combined with soil analysis make it possible to measure moisture content. Soil resistivity is also a relatively simple and cheap measurement

Strategies: With soil, farmers can use two strategies to adjust field inputs;

1. Predict Approach: this is the analysis of static indicators (soil, resistivity, field history etc.) during the crop cycle.

2. The Control Approach: the information from static indicators is regularly updated during the crop cycle by, sampling, remote sensing, proxy detection, aerial or satellite remote sensing decision based on crop simulation models.

Implementing practices: New information and communication technologies (NICT) make field-level crop management easier and operational for farmers. Application of crop management decisions calls for agricultural equipment that supports variable-rate technology (VRT), like; varying seed density along with variable-rate application (VRA) of nitrogen and phytosanitary products.

Precision agriculture uses the technology on agricultural equipment (e.g. tractors, sprayers, harvesters, etc.) Positioning system (e.g. GPS receivers that use satellite signals to precisely determine a position on the globe) Geographic information systems (GIS), i.e., softwares that makes sense of all the available data; variable-rate farming equipment (seeder, spreader).

Benefits of Precision Farming

• It allows farmers monitor the soil and determine physicochemical parameters. The ideal conditions for plant growth can be achieved just by placing sensors (electrical conductivity, nitrates, temperature, evapotranspiration, radiation, leaf and soil moisture, etc.)
• It aids farmers in obtaining data in real time. The application of sensing devices in your fields will allow you monitor and offer real time data which will ensure an updated status of the field.
• It provides better information for management decisions.
• It saves time and costs, as it reduces fertilizer and chemical application costs and reduce pollution through less use of chemicals.
• It provides better farm records that is essential for sale and succession.
• It also aids; less fuel use, less soil compaction, less hired labor requirement and more timely sowing.

As good as precision farming is, the farmer should do a proper research before venturing into one. As misuse of these products and lack of awareness of the field parameters can decrease productivity and endanger the environmental balance in the cultivation area.

Farmers and landowners who decide to use technology to manage their fields should consider precision farming as it seems to bring many benefits, and ultimately increase of profit.

AgriQ & Automations will now compete for $ 5,000 grant price at the international Meet the Farmers Conference which will hold In Dubai on the 4th – 5th November 2018. It is a two-day conference which includes an all-expense paid trip to Dubai for the Grand Finale of the challenge and an opportunity to get funding, investment opportunities from African and GCC investors, business expansion opportunities and access to experts and mentors in the business of Agriculture.

The challenge is scheduled to hold during MTFC Kenya, Nairobi where they would compete for a chance to win the $5,000 grant prize at the maiden edition of the Agric Innovation Contest.

Qualitrace, a Ghana-based traceability and anti-counterfeiting startup that uses track and trace technology to authenticate product farm inputs and outputs won the Ghana edition of Innov8Agric Challenge.

The challenge is aimed at promoting ground-breaking ideas for early stage Agric entrepreneurs from all sectors in the agricultural ecosystem, using creative and innovative methods to change the landscape of its value chain in Africa. The competition will guide Agri-tech entrepreneurs around their way in the industry and will open them up to funding and investment opportunities in Africa and the GCC region.

The winner from Kenya will get an all-expense paid trip to Dubai for the Grand Finale of the challenge, a $5000 grant, as well as investment opportunities from African and GCC investors, opportunities for business expansion and access to experts and mentors in agribusiness.

The Kenyan edition of the Innov8Agric will bring together innovative ideas across East Africa during the Meet the Farmers Conference, holding at the Intercontinental Hotel, Nairobi, Kenya on 21st September 2018.

The chosen start-ups are;

Agrifor

Agrifor is a social enterprise committed to empowerment and poverty eradication one farm at a time by bridging the existing gaps in supply of high quality seed and seedlings. They provide affordable integrated solution of high value dryland seed, seedlings and crops such as mukau (Melia volkensii), and legumes for smallholder farmers.

Dophia

They aim to train farmers on sustainable methods through climate-smart techniques. The Dophia idea involves setting up of a productive and integrated demo farm where farmers are trained.

Agronomy Plus

It is a web-app, USSD based platform that provides; on demand extension service (agronomists) to small holder farmers closest to them at half the cost and provide traceability report for off-takers.

Vinis

Their idea is centred around a Plant-derived bio-pesticide by the name Molepse Bio resource that will help curb post-harvest losses of maize and other grains. The product is not only a repellent, it is also toxic to all major post-harvest pests.

AgriQ & Automations

An automated solar-powered evaporative cooler that offers a convenient, yet affordable and efficient way of extending the shelf-life of perishable farm produce in off-grid areas. The design details the replacement of charcoal with briquettes in the traditional cooler to make the cooler greener and more effective.

One winner from the shortlisted candidates will go on to pitch before a global audience at the MTFC Grand Finale which will hold on 4th & 5th November 2018 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

The five start-ups were selected based on the innovation, originality, and viability of their ideas and were vetted by top-notch entrepreneurs, investors and industry leaders across Africa.

However, this sector is a gold mine yet to be fully explored, and this is an issue that demands discussion. The Agric sector has been a matter of serious concern to the federal government of Nigeria. There is a dire need to boost the country’s GDP through agriculture, raise exports, reduce importation and promote self-sufficiency.

The question of whether or not to farm is not a big deal, farming is a given. The catch however, is financing the initiative until it booms. How to secure a loan and what it takes to secure Agric loans in Nigeria. These are big questions that need to be answered urgently.

The main obstacle entrepreneurs encounter when they intend to venture into agribusiness is no longer whether it is worth investing in but the problem of fund.

For the sake of this piece, we have compiled a list of some government grants and loans available for Nigerian farmers to keep their business booming.

1. Bank of Agriculture

The Bank of Agriculture of Nigeria is the main channel that the government uses to provide loans and grants to the public. The bank is owned by the federal government, with the Central Bank of Nigeria and the Federal Ministry of Finance incorporated as shareholders.

The Bank of Agriculture (BOA) was established to help farmers develop their fields to any extent possible by giving low interest loans to qualified applicants.

The process of borrowing from BOA is not too strict compared to other loan rendering banks. BOA operates at a level of direct lending, collaboration, and credit monitoring.

However, Agric loan is not exclusive to BOA, other commercial Banks have also been partnering with the FG to assist Farmers.

2. CBN agricultural loans

Still piggybacking off the above, this loan scheme was set up by the federal government to provide low-interest loans to farmers in Nigeria. The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) recently approved the disbursement of about 75billion naira as loans to farmers and cooperative societies in all 36 states including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). This loan can be accessed directly through the Bank of Agriculture.

3. Agricultural co-operative societies

Another way for farmers to secure agricultural loans is through cooperative societies. Credits given to these communities come as grants. As a rule, the cooperative societies could be provided with the grants by the banks who will then distribute it to each member on the basis of contributory payments. As a farmer, some of the most important agricultural cooperatives you can join are:

All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN), Youth Empowerment in the Agricultural Program (YEAP), and FADAMA.

4. Attend Agro Conferences

After securing fund for your agribusiness, then what comes to your mind as a farmer when you harvest your farm produce? This is when attending conferences comes to place. Agropreneurs can get loads of insights and advantage from attending Agro-conferences.
